Ireland's youngest pro boxer James Power wins debut

Cork teenager James Power won his first professional bout in Tijuana in Mexico last night with a second-round stoppage of local opponent Omar Santos.

In doing so, the 17-year old becomes Ireland's youngest ever professional boxer.

His debut pro bout went according to plan as he accounted for Mexican Santos.

The young Cork fighter thanked his supporters on Instagram last night.

"Absolutely delighted to get the win against a very strong and tough opponent tonight. Can't thank you all enough for the support leading up to this. It is incredible to have so many supporters already," he posted.

Power is not able to apply for an Irish boxing licence until he turns 18 in April next year and decided to head to Mexico where he was granted a licence by the Tijuana Boxing Association.

He now faces into the prospect of Leaving Cert year as he returns to his secondary school at Coachford College in Cork.
