This Week In Boxing Biz: With Andre Ward Retiring, Here's Who Terence Crawford Says Is No. 1

Now that @andreward and @FloydMayweather retired from boxing I am the one to fill the #1 spot and I'm done talking about it.

Well, there are plenty of others talking about it as well, and for now, Crawford is not the consensus No. 1.

Take the Ring magazine, for instance. Earlier this week, the magazine proclaimed Gennady Golovkin No. 1 with Crawford at No. 2. ESPN also has Golovkin No. 1, but Crawford is No. 3. And this is my ballot that I recently turned into the Boxing Writers Association of America.

1. Vasyl Lomachenko

2. Terence Crawford

3. Gennady Golovkin

4. Canelo Alvarez

5. Sergey Kovalev

6. Keith Thurman

7. Guillermo Rigondeaux

8. Naoya Inoue

9. Errol Spence

10. Mikey Garcia

Legendary trainer Freddie Roach, though, thinks Crawford makes a valid point.

“I think [Terence] Crawford is the best fighter, pound-for-pound, in the world today,” Roach told FightHub. “He can box, he can move for 12 rounds, he can punch, he hurts everybody. In his last win, he fought the African fighter (Julius Indongo), who’s a really tough guy—I saw him win the title in Moscow, and he’s just a big, strong guy—and I thought, ‘If Crawford takes this guy lightly he might be surprised.’ And he went right after him. He went right after him and made the guy look ordinary, with a body shot.”

Yes, Crawford’s recent run of fights has been impressive. After blasting through Viktor Postol, who was largely considered the No. 2 fighter in the junior welterweight division, in July 2016, Crawford dominated John Molina and the formerly undefeated Felix Diaz. Then, he did this to Indongo, who held two title belts of his own and was coming off two impressive victories.

Still, giving the top spot to Golovkin makes sense, even though he ended up with a draw vs. Canelo Alvarez. The majority of ringside reporters scored it closely for Golovkin. And you know who else did?

Canelo Alvarez-Gennady Golovkin gate/PPV buy results: It turns out that people were interested in watching Alvarez vs. Golovkin, even though it came a scant three weeks after the Floyd Mayweather-Conor McGregor event took up so much of the oxygen in the mainstream sports world last month.

Now that Andre Ward, the consensus No. 1 pound-for-pound boxer in the world, has retired, it’s an open question about who is the best fighter on the globe. Terence Crawford has an easy answer for that.
