To make sure that he retains the world junior bantamweight crown against undefeated Jamie Conlan on November 18, Jerwin Ancajas will have to take the judges out of the equation by winning convincingly.
Ancajas will defend his belt at SSE Arena in Conlan’s turf in Belfast, Ireland, where thousands of Irishmen are expected to give their guest a not-so-warm reception.
But boxing analyst Dennis Principe said that more than the hostile crowd, Ancajas should be wary of the judges.
“I'm not concerned about iyong lalaban sila sa backyard ni Conlan. What I'm concerned about is the judges,” Principe said.
Principe said that, although Conlan remains unbeaten in 19 fights, he thinks the “Irish Gatti” still can’t handle a stylist such as Ancajas. Hence, the officiating might play a big role in the title fight, he said.
“Malayo pa sa liga ni Ancajas iyong Conlan,” he said. “Si Conlan is not much of a threat. I see the judges can be more of a threat kay Conlan,” Principe said.
Regarding the Irish fans, Ancajas’ handlers already know how it feels like fighting in hostile territory.
“Knowing iyong kanyang handlers na well-versed sa sport na ito, iyong challenge of fighting in the hometown of Conlan alam nila,” said Principe.
The last time Ancajas defended his title was when he disposed of Japanese challenger Teiru Kinoshita in just 7 rounds in Brisbane, Australia in July.
“If you noticed (against Kinoshita), Jerwin entered the ring smiling, waving at the crowd, enjoying the moment. At first, I was thinking if he was faking, 'di pinakikita ang pressure ‘cause it was his first major outing e,” recalled Principe.
“But as it turned out, he fought really well and backed up the confidence he showed by unleashing a splendid performance. Sabi ko this is brand new, confident Ancajas na nakita ko. Although may konting reservations ako sa power niya, pero overall he's a very skillful fighter and he'll be a longtime champion.”
