Boxing 2017: The Knockout Of The Year

On November 4, a peeved and irritated Deontay Wilder took on Bermane Stiverne in a rematch of their 2015 bout. In the first fight, Wilder beat Stiverne via lopsided unanimous decision to become the WBC heavyweight champion.

It was the only time an opponent has managed to go the distance with Wilder as a professional.

The rematch came about when Stiverne was named a replacement for Luis Ortiz who failed a pre-fight drug test. Having lost two opponents prior to doping violations, Wilder was frustrated and eager to inflict some pain on anyone who opposed him. With Stiverne having gone the distance the first time, Wilder was determined not to allow him to see the final bell in the rematch.

It didn't take long for Wilder to end the night.

Rarely will you see a fighter perform a basketball-like move in the ring to set up a knockout punch, but Wilder looked to imitate a crossover dribble before landing a right hand behind Stiverne's ear.

The final punch left Stiverne like this...

Zolani Tete, Mike Alvarado, and Jermell Charlo both had memorable KOs in 2017, but the Bronze Bomber's savagery is the right choice. The devastating nature of the finish combined with Wilder's strong push for a unification bout with Joshua made this one significant and my KO of the year.

As usual, the year 2017 featured a number of memorable knockouts, but one, in particular, stood out as the KO of the Year.
