The quiet weather pattern for most of the United Kingdom leading up to Christmas is not expected to last through Boxing Day.
The recent mild stretch of weather will come to an end on Christmas Day as a cold front sweeps across the British Isles, bringing a band of rain and gusty winds to the U.K. from later Christmas into Christmas night.
In the wake of the front, chillier air will bring temperatures back to more seasonable levels throughout the U.K. for Boxing Day. Highs will range from 2-6 C (36-43 F) across the northern U.K. Following highs of around 10 C (50 F) on Christmas Day, temperatures will be held to 4-9 C (40s F) in Wales and southern England.
The passage of the front will also mark the beginning of a stormy stretch of weather for the U.K., much to the dismay of travelers and those hoping to partake in the many Boxing Day festivities.
The morning and early afternoon hours on Boxing Day will be the best time for travel and other outdoor activities in southeastern England. In fact, around London, rain may not arrive until after sunset.
It would be better for residents to head to the Natural History Museum Ice Rink in London earlier in the day than toward sunset. The rain should hold off until after the midday barrel rolling races at Grantchester, located outside of Cambridge.

In addition to the rain, Tuesday's storm will also produce gusty winds.
Travel delays, as well as sporadic power cuts and tree damage may result. Wind gusts may reach or exceed 50 mph (80 km/h) along coastal and exposed areas of southern England and southern Wales. Wind gusts will not be quite as strong around London, generally closer to 35 mph (56 km/h).
The gusty wind will also help to usher in chillier air by the nighttime hours Tuesday.
"Colder air will move in behind this low allowing some snow to mix in Tuesday night, especially across the higher elevations of Wales and southern England," AccuWeather meteorologist Steve Travis said.

That colder air will likely reach southeastern England into Wednesday morning.
"Some snowflakes may even be seen in London early Wednesday morning as the low moves away to the east," Travis added.
The chillier weather will persist through around Friday before temperatures start to bounce back in the final days of 2017.
