After almost three decades and 75 fights, boxing great Roy Jones Jr. will be calling it a career. Interestingly enough, his final bout will air on UFC Fight Pass.
“Ya’ll musta forgot I always said that my final fight would be in my hometown of Pensacola,” Jones said in the announcement. “I meant it then, and I mean it now. This is where it all began for me, this will be my 75th professional fight, and it will be my last one. I have been friends with [UFC President] Dana White for years and am so excited for UFC Fight Pass to be streaming this event.”
“Roy Jones has had a long and distinguished career,” White said. “We have wanted to work together for a long time and I’m glad that I could bring his final fight to all the fans who have UFC Fight Pass.”
Jones, who has won his last three bouts, will be facing Scott Sigmon for the vacant WBU cruiserweight title. The February 8 event will be handled by his company, Square Ring Promotions, and will stream on UFC Fight Pass at 7:30 p.m. ET (Jones’ bout is expected to start at 10 p.m. ET).
The card will have a mix of MMA and boxing matches, and will be the first time the Sweet Science has been featured on the UFC’s streaming service.
The 49-year-old is considered as one of the best boxers of his time. He has won titles in four divisions, and is the only boxer to start his professional career at light middleweight and go on to win a heavyweight title.
While this bout against Sigmon has been pegged as his retirement bout, Jones still seems to be leaving the door open for that long discussed cross-over match with former UFC champ Anderson Silva. Could that be possible now that UFC has plans of hosting boxing matches of their own, and is working more with Jones for this event?
