Boxing Biz: Anthony Joshua-Joseph Parker, Gennady Golovkin-Canelo Alvarez Replacement?

Deontay Wilder overcame the most adversity of his career vs. Luis Oritz, it’s time for the unified heavyweight titilist to take on one of his most important opponents. And you can be sure Anthony Joshua, who holds two of the heavyweight belts, is looking to put on a quite a show vs. the undefeated Joseph Parker and take the one belt he owns on Saturday night.

Joshua is a -700 betting favorite, meaning you’d have to bet $700 on him to win $100, and Parker (24-0, 18 KOs) is a +450 underdog. There’s not much doubt who’s expected to win this bout. But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t watch it at 5 p.m. ET on Showtime. You most certainly should, because it’s one of the sport’s most important bouts in 2018.

“I feel like this is what we have to do,” Joshua (20-0, 20 KOs), who’s reportedly expected to make at least £13 million from this fight, said at a press conference this week. “If champions don’t face off, then we won’t bring excitement to boxing, and I feel like we heavyweights are the flagbearers for the sport.”

There are plenty of reasons to watch the fight. Here are three of them.

1)Watching Joshua is an event—period: If you’re a boxing fan, you can’t skip a fight involving Joshua, who’s No. 2 on the Pound-For-Pound Moneymakers list. He’s got some of the most power of any boxer in the sport, and he routinely brings in between 70,000-90,000 fans for his bouts in the U.K. (this one at Principality Stadium in Cardiff, Wales is supposed to draw close to 80,000 people). Joshua is certainly used to the crowds and the media attention and the overall big-event feel. Joshua wonders if Parker will be ready for it.

“It took me a few times to get used to it,” Joshua told BBC Radio 5, via the Independent. “It's an experience he hasn't faced yet. It is daunting, it is overwhelming. You have a fighter that will block out the noise, which takes a whole heap of energy. Then you have a fighter who rides the wave, which can leave you too excited. The fight is won or lost in training camp but the last bolt is screwed on during the spell from your changing room to the first bell.”

2)Parker could actually win, you know: There are quite a few reasons Joseph could pull off a major upset. He’s a good technical boxer—perhaps the best Joshua has ever faced—and he’s got good speed and movement. Plus, according to his trainer, this is the first time Parker has been healthy in quite a while, and he seems to have plenty of confidence. “I’m going to beat Joshua,” Parker said at a press conference this week. “I haven’t decided how I want to beat him yet. I don’t know if it’s a knockout or if it’s points or decision. We’ll see how I feel on fight night. But I’m going to be undefeated going home with the belts. These are mine.”
