Up North: 4th Annual Jack O'Brien Boxing Invitational Honors Boxing Icon

"I felt like I could just like do a little better, not wait too much in the first round," said Joseph Miranda following his victory.

"Second round I kept on going forward he kept on going backwards, so I kept on going forward. That's how I won the fight," Kevin Ayala added following his win.

The tournament featured some of the top guys in the region from a total of nine gyms. Each boxer was guaranteed to fight two days in a row.

"It's to get them experience fighting two days in a row which is the way you advance to nationals and the Olympics," said Zach Walters of Jungle Boy Boxing. "This is lower level Olympic style boxing."

While a title was on the line for boxers, the tournament is also mean to honor the late Jack O'Brien.

"Jack was a great guy and he was fun hitting on the mitts," said Daniel Huffman of Jungle Boy Boxing. "He was an older guy and he'd still get up every day and hit mitts with us so it a lot of fun."

O'Brien was a boxing icon who was in involved in the sport for more than 70 years. He passed away in 2015, but got to witness the first ever Jack O'Brien Invitational. Since then, it's grown into a two-day event.

"I kind of thought, man, I bet Jack would like it if we made it a tournament; get the best of the best. He always liked to train the best boxers and he was a stickler on fundamentals," said Walters.

Jesse Walters of Jungle Boy Boxing took home the title in 130 pound open division, while Evan Wrazidlo won the 160 pound open division.
