Cheyenne, Wy- It all began back in 1978, that's when boxing legend Coach Tomas Pacheco started training boxers in the Cheyenne area.
Coach Mark Sisneros
In 2010 we lost legendary boxing coach Pacheco but his legacy is alive at the Cheyenne Amateur Boxing Club today. His coaching Philosophy was to keep kids off the streets and out of trouble.
After Pacheco's passing a former boxer of his took over. Mark Sisneros started training with him in 1978. In fact, he trained with him for over 25 years. In those 25 years Coach Pacheco helped Sisneros get to the 1984 Olympic Trials, many national bouts, and even competed at the international level.
Up stairs in Storey Gym you will find a room filled with punching bags, gloves, a boxing ring, and many pictures of coach Pacheco and Sisneros together.
Now as head coach Sisneros works to implement the same principles into his athletes that coach Pacheco once did for him and so many others.
“Some of the guys that come in here, came in because of being bullied at school and what not. They don’t come in here to learn how to beat someone up they come here to learn how to defend themselves.”
Now as a head coach, Sisneros enjoys watching his athletes implement the skills and discipline they’ve been taught into their bouts and their everyday lives.
“Coach Pacheco completely revised the meaning of coach to me. He was more than just an athletic coach he was a life coach.”
A coach that has paved the way for aspiring boxers in our area, and taught one of life’s most important lessons: In order to be a champion you must always fight one more round.
Athletes at the Cheyenne Amateur Boxing Club have the opportunity to compete in Colorado, Utah, Nebraska, Montana, and right here in the Cowboy State. If you are interested in learning how to box practice is held Mondays, Wednesday, and Fridays from 6:30 to 8:30 in the evening.
