Council takes possession of Bray Boxing Club following shooting

Wicklow County Council has taken possession of Bray Boxing Club following a fatal shooting there last week.

50-year-old Bobby Messett was shot dead during the early morning shooting on Tuesday 5 June.

Boxing trainer Pete Taylor, father of World and former Olympic champion Katie Taylor, and another man were injured in the attack.

Mr Messett was among a group of at least 15 people who were in the gym for an early morning fitness session when the attack occurred.

Bray Boxing Club was established by Mr Taylor, who is head coach there.

The club operated out of a recently-renovated building in Bray Harbour which is owned by Wicklow County Council.

In a statement, the council said that they have secured the building.

The council said it "has a responsibility to ensure that the building is restored to a condition fit for community use."

An examination is to carried out at the premises "with a view to undertaking any necessary repairs."

The council says it is liaising with representatives of the boxing club about the issue.

Bray Boxing Club is where Katie Taylor trained during her amateur career.
