The BWAA announced Friday that Lomachenko had become the first Ukrainian fighter in the 80-year history of the award to win, beating out Crawford (who I personally voted for), Anthony Joshua, Mikey Garcia and Srisaket Sor Rungvisai. Though Crawford had the more consequential victories, beating former Olympic gold medalist Felix Diaz before knocking out Julius Indongo to unify all four titles at junior welterweight, he only fought twice in 2017.
Meanwhile, Lomachenko looked spectacular in all three of his bouts, stopping Jason Sosa and Miguel Marriaga before forcing fellow pound-for-pound fighter Guillermo Rigondeaux to quit after six rounds, a fight that earned Lomachenko a $1.2 million purse.
Lomachenko—who holds the No. 4 spot in the Boxing Pound-For-Pound Moneymakers list—wasn’t the only one to be recognized for his success. Anatoly Lomachenko, his trainer and father, was voted the Trainer of the Year, and Egis Klimas was named the sport’s Manager of the Year. It’s the first time since 1992 that the BWAA has recorded what it calls a triple crown when Riddick Bowe, his trainer Eddie Futch, and his manager Rock Newman all won the BWAA awards.
It’s the first time Anatoly Lomachenko has won the award (my vote went to him, as well), and it’s the second-straight year Klimas has been recognized as the sport’s top manager (my vote went to Keith Connolly for his work with Daniel Jacobs and Luis Collazo).
Much like the Forbes contributors, the BWAA voters named Anthony Joshua’s knockout of Wladimir Klitschko as the Fight of the Year, while Cecilia Braekhus was recognized as the organization’s first ever Female Fighter of the Year.
Daniel Franco, who suffered a brain injury in June and continues to make “great progress” on his road to recovery, has been named the Courage Award winner.
">Though various organizations picked Terence Crawford as their 2017 Fighter of the Year—including the Forbes contributors—the Boxing Writers Association of America have gone with a different choice: Vasyl Lomachenko.
