Opening up Saturday night’s Top Rank Boxing on ESPN card in Oklahoma City was a super-lightweight (140 lbs) bout between OKC’s own Alex Saucedo (28-0, 18 KOs) and former title challenger Lenny Zappavigna (37-4, 27 KOs) of Australia. This had potential to be a barnburner, and it delivered one of the bloodiest, most entertaining scraps of 2018.
Saucedo and Zappavigna wasted no time trading heavy leather, with Zappavigna cut in round 2, then knocked down in round 3, but Saucedo was getting tagged flush plenty of times along the way. It looked as if Saucedo was on his way towards victory, and then round 4 produced absolute chaos. Saucedo got clocked with a right hand and a left hook, putting him in major trouble. Zappavigna went for the finish, while Saucedo fired back in spurts, remaining upright throughout this gloriously violent three minutes. You can even see one exchange cause some blood to splatter on one of ESPN’s cameras.
Watch the full 4th round here:
Ultimately, “Lenny Z” proved to be too tough for his own good, as Saucedo weathered the storm and busted up Lenny with brutal accuracy and combination punching. Zappavigna’s face was a crimson mask, his left eye was swollen shut. In the 7th round, Lenny’s corner told the referee to stop the fight, which was a no-brainer at that point. The two men combined to throw almost 1,050 punches, but Saucedo landed about half of his power shots, and the end result was something out of a horror movie.
Saucedo is lined up for a title shot against WBO champion Maurice Hooker, which would be an intriguing Oklahoma vs. Texas battle, while Zappavigna’s valiant effort is apparently his last fight, at just 30 years old.
So much appreciation for LennyZ who told us this was his last fight tonight. Congratulations on a wonderful career. You are nothing but class and a true warrior! @trboxing pic.twitter.com/t0WJn3IeDV
